We were commissioned to create an interactive oral history exhibit for the Bristol MShed Museums’ major summer exhibition, Bristol Music: Seven Decades of Sound in 2017. We ask a series of fans, artists and producers from across seven decades of Bristol music to answer one question:
Tell us about a piece of music that means something to you.
Working with a radio broadcast recordist and a professional portrait photographer, I created a set of seven vinyl records with a portrait of the interviewee on the front, a recording of their interview on the A-side, and the track they discuss on the B-side. Exhibition visitors could dig through the records, choose one and listen to it on the provided Technics 12010’s while sitting comfortably in a big armchair. The aim here was to get people to listen and engage in oral history recordings by making use of the tangibility of vinyl.
